Description: Join the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay for a garden clean up and refresh for the green spaces at Dogwood Middle School (formerly Binford Middle). Participants should come prepared to plant native plants, weed, prune, water, and spread mulch. Supplies and tools will be provided. Wear closed toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Plant I.D. Tour of the Low Line with Capital Trees

Description: Join Capital Trees of a Plant I.D. Tour of the Low Line Gardens. Located along the Virginia Capital Trail these public urban gardens pack a lot into a relatively small space! With human use and a sustainable ecosystem in mind, The Low Line has as much to admire above ground as it does below. Visitors to the gardens are met with a biodiverse plant palette made up of 75% state native species and thoughtfully placed seating areas. Behind the scenes, these intentionally landscaped areas are hard at work reducing stormwater runoff through environmentally focused rain gardens and biofiltration systems.

We will take a slow wander down the trail and through the gardens to highlight and identify some of our favorite fall plants. The tour will begin at Great Shiplock park (2803 Dock Street) and cover a mile stretch down the Low Line and back with the option to extend further if interested. Please plan to meet at the Capital Trail Sign at Great Shiplock Park. Oak Grove Tree Planting with Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Description: Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for a tree planting at Oak Grove Playground in Southside Richmond. Volunteers will work together to plant a variety of medium-sized trees, that will provide shade and green space, absorb rainwater and pollution, and expand tree canopy in an area suffering from urban heat island effect. No prior experience is necessary! Tools, gloves, and instructions will be provided. Advance registration required to help plan for appropriate number of tools. Native Seed Harvesting with PRCF & Richmond Grows Gardens

Description: Join City of Richmond Parks staff for a seed harvesting and processing workshop! We will be visiting the Riverine Chapter of the Master Naturalist Butterfly Garden in Bryan Park as our populations for harvesting seed. We will go over the importance of native plants, keys to plant identification, responsible harvesting practices, and seed winnowing (the process of separating seeds from the rest of the dried material). Seed harvesting and processing are not only incredibly useful skills to have (which can be used with home vegetable and flower beds), but is also a thoroughly enjoyable pastime - this will be a fun workshop! The harvested seeds will be used for future environmental restoration projects within Parks properties. All ages are welcome. All materials will be provided. POSTPONED: Urban Wood Mobile Milling Demonstration with RVA Urban Wood & PRCF

Description: Come see the first step of turning a reclaimed tree from Bryan Park into usable lumber! RVA Urban Wood, in collaboration with Reforest Richmond, Virginia Department of Forestry, and City of Richmond Parks and Rec, will present their first collaborative public wood milling demonstration.  This is a FREE event - please register to receive specific instructions on how to find the demo location.

About the Tree:
The Red Oak tree selected for this demonstration previously stood in the Big Market parking lot. It was removed due to extensive rot in the upper portions of the tree and the risk represented to park visitors. By reclaiming this tree we are diverting the usable portion of the tree from the landfill, turning it into lumber that will be used by local makers.

Description: Join Tyler Holtzman, horticulturist for the Science Museum of Virginia, on a tour of their new public greenspace ""The Green"". The Green will ultimately be a 6 acre park along Broad St and part of a long term plan to convert 20 of the 37 acre campus into greenspace. Phase 1, completed in May of 2023, reclaimed 1.5 acres of asphalt surface parking lot, was planted with 100% state native species and aligns with the Richmond 300 small area plan for Greater Scott's Addition. Come out and learn how this transition took place and what the future looks like for Phase 2 which officially launched on September 18th!

Description: Join the JRPS Invasive Plant Management team to remove invasive vines (wintercreeper and English ivy) near the rapids at Pony Pasture. This two acre demonstration site has been under invasive management for eight years and in November will be the site of an understory (small trees and shrubs) restoration planting. To get ready, we are intensifying removal of invasive vine groundcover in areas. Tools and gloves will be provided by JRPS but feel free to bring your favorites from home. Description: So, what is “urban wood'“ and why is it important? Learn about this valuable, yet often underutilized resource, and what steps we can take to salvage and repurpose what some consider “waste”. Join us for an informational talk with Joe Lehnen with the VA Department of Forestry, and Keenan Rowe, founder of RVA Urban Wood. There they will share about progress being made in state and local level, how to get involved locally, as well as the importance of rethinking the use of our local urban wood resources in Richmond. Belle Isle Invasive Species Removal and Planting with the Richmond Tree Stewards & JRPS

Description: Volunteer with the Richmond Tree Stewards to remove invasive non-native plants and plant native trees and shrubs in their place on Belle Isle. Note that work site locations change based on shifting priorities and weather conditions, so be sure to call team leader Catherine Farmer for your day's location. The parking lot at 300 Tredegar Street opens at 9 AM. Once parked, take the suspension pedestrian bridge over to Belle Isle and meet by the Bike Skills course. Sturdy shoes, long sleeves and long pants are required. Be sure to bring a water bottle. Please bring work gloves and tools (clippers, e.g.) if you have them. Description: American Forests, a non-profit conservation organization that’s dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy forest ecosystems, has developed a new tool for cities and states ready to bring Tree Equity to fruition - one city lot at a time. The Tree Equity Score Analyzer (TESA) is a free software tool that provides human centered, deep-dive data driven analytics to aid decision making when considering areas for urban tree plantings. Southside ReLeaf is happy to bring area tree workers and organizations together for a training using this new free software. Our hope is that by giving more people access and training on how to use this tool, together we will be paving the way to a more healthy, equitable, and sustainable environment for all residents in South Richmond. Join us on October 26th from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the Boys and Girls Club at 2409 Bainbridge. This is a FREE event - please register to assist us in ensuring enough seating.

We will be learning about the importance of old growth forests, invasive species, and the history of this area. We will be weeding and mulching around young trees that were planted in the large lawn earlier this year, and preparing them for dormancy over winter, ensuring a healthy start come next spring. Description: We will be removing invasive plants along the Buttermilk Trail to encourage native plant growth and native tree regeneration. We will be working off-trail on uneven terrain and slopes and occasionally around small streams. Work gloves will be provided or bring your own. Jefferson Park Tree Planting with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Description: Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for a tree planting at Jefferson Park. Volunteers will work together to plant a variety of medium-sized trees, that will provide shade and green space, absorb rainwater and pollution, and expand tree canopy in an area suffering from urban heat island effect. No prior experience is necessary! Tools, gloves, and instructions will be provided. Advance registration required to help plan for appropriate number of tools. Rain Barrel Workshop with the James River Association

Description: Did you know a single rain barrel can harvest hundreds, even thousands of gallons of rainwater annually? If you are interested in installing a rain barrel at home, join the James River Association for our rain barrel workshop on Saturday, October 28. Staff members will instruct workshop participants on how to assemble and install their rain barrels at home. Registration fee for the workshop is $50 and includes a 55-gallon drum, a “RainRecycle” rain barrel kit from The Rain Barrel Depot, and a native plant from Reedy Creek Environmental.

Tree Planting with Capital Trees & Keep Virginia Beautiful

Description: Capital Trees, in partnership with Keep Virginia Beautiful and City of Richmond Parks & Rec, will be hosting a tree planting event at Canoe Run Park (600 West 22nd Street). For this corporate sponsored event, we will be planting 50 trees along the exercise trail around the field, and we need extra hands to help get a diverse range of species planted in one afternoon! Whether you have participated in other tree planting events, or this is your first time, we could use your help!

The workday will be held on Sunday, October 29th from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. A safety talk and tree planting overview will happen at the start of the event.

We do ask that everyone wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and request that participants bring a reusable water bottle. Layer-able clothes and a hat are highly encouraged. Additional information about weather and parking will be shared after registration.
