Join the James River Association for a community tree planting at the North Avenue Branch Library. This planting is a part of the "Greening Richmond Public Libraries" initiative, which looks to not only increase public awareness of storm water runoff, but also take tangible steps towards reducing it. This event will be aimed at expanding the urban tree canopy in the neighborhood surrounding the library. We'll have two volunteer shifts, 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. Free lunch will be provided for those who register.

Tree Care + Planting Prep

Chimborazo Native Food Project is a community garden located in the east end of Richmond, VA. They are committed to clearing out invasive plants and replacing them with natives! We will be planting a number of native shrubs for Richmond Tree Week, as well as weeding and removing invasive plants in the area.

The work will be done on a sloped area with uneven ground, so closed toe shoes are mandatory - sturdy boots are highly recommended. Long sleeves and long pants are also recommended, as there are invasive Himalayan blackberry patches in the area. Tools and gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves if you feel more comfortable with them. Drinking water will be available, but please bring a refillable bottle.

We will meet directly across the cobblestone road from the Church Hill Dog Park in Chimborazo Park. Parking can be found in the lot above the dog park, or on the street level when entering the park.

Join the 500-Year Forest Foundation for a “Walk in the Woods” to promote and learn about the importance of old growth forests in the Richmond area. The forest behind the Carillon is Civil War era. We will be learning about the importance of old growth forests, invasive species, and the history of this area. Wear good walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat and water. Please leave your dog at home, thank you!

UFD Tree Pruning Workshop Urban Forestry Division - City of Richmond

So you've planted a tree - now what? Join Arborists with the City of Richmond's Urban Forestry Division, for a hands-on workshop on how to prune and care for young trees. This workshop is suitable for homeowners looking to gain practical knowledge on how to monitor and maintain their trees, or for any Richmond Tree Stewards or community partners who are seeking to improve their tree care skills.

The workshop will be held at Swansboro Playground, where trees were planted in 2021 in partnership with Southside ReLeaf, the Chesapeak Bay Foundation, and Parks & Rec. Attendees can expect practical and personal instructions on how to properly prune these young trees in the first 1.5hr, followed by a short break for the RTW Kick Off Celebration, and ending with more tree care tasks and additional time to complete any unfinished pruning. All of this work will help to prepare these young trees for the Fall and Winter months. The first 3 years after planting is considered the most critical time in ensuring healthy root and structural development, so help create a future full of happy trees!

This is a FREE event, however registration is required.

In recognition of the City's 32nd year, we will be receiving our Tree City USA designation from our partners at the Virginia Department of Forestry. We invite community members to then help us plant our 2024 Arbor Day tree in recognition of this day, as well as learn about all the other events happening throughout the city during RTW. Be sure to take home your own baby tree from our RTW Tree Giveaway Station (while supplies last).

Learn how to ensure healthy growth in trees while helping to create a shadier and cooler future in Southside! Join the City of Richmond's Parks & Rec in performing various tree care activities at Swansboro Playground. There, we will care for the trees that were planted in 2021 in partnership with Southside ReLeaf, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

An annual event looked forward to by many, join the Richmond Tree Stewards for their Annual Tree Giveaway! This year will be a bit different from years past. We are focusing on increasing tree canopy coverage in historically underserved neighborhoods in Southside. Heat islands in this area often see temperatures up to 16 degrees hotter than other areas of our city.

We will be giving away 500 trees to homeowners in the 15 neighborhoods located in the following zip codes: 23234, 23224 and 23225. Half of the trees are available by pre-registration starting September 16th. The remaining 250 trees will be available, first come first served, on the day of the event (Saturday October 12th). Be aware that if you try to reserve trees and you do not live in the targeted zip codes, your order will be rejected. 

Also new this year, planting assistance will be provided for those who may need it. Please visit our website for more details on planting assistance eligibility requirements!

Join members of Southside ReLeaf and Parks & Rec for a community tree planting! We will be planting 5 trees on the grounds of J.H. Blackwell Elementary School, which in maturity, will provide much needed shade and cooler temperatures for students using the nearby playground. If time and capacity allows, we will also be mulching and weeding out some of the mature trees on the grounds, including some that were planted 5 years ago.

Rain Barrel Workshop

Join the James River Association for a rain barrel workshop and tree giveaway at Richmond's East End Branch Library on Saturday, October 12! From 9am-10am, JRA staff members will instruct rain barrel workshop participants on how to assemble and install rain barrels at home. The registration fee for the workshop is $50 and each registration comes with a 55-gallon drum and a RainRecycle rain barrel kit from The Rain Barrel Depot.

Following the rain barrel workshop, participants and community members are welcome to take home a tree as part of a tree giveaway. The giveaway is free to attend and will take place from 10am-12pm.

Join LERN and The Reedy Creek Coalition for a 1-hr walking tour through Crooked Branch Ravine - one of Richmond’s hidden gems. Topics covered during the walk will include tree identification, the role of trees in protecting water quality and reducing heat islands, and the impact of invasive plants on tree canopy. The second hour will be devoted to removing English ivy from a high quality forested area of the park, as well as plant some small trees and shrubs to enhance the understory.

In partnership with the Richmond Tree Stewards and Southside ReLeaf, we will be planting 13 young trees in approved city street sites between the sidewalk and curb throughout Swansboro West. These trees will help create much needed shade in an area lacking in trees, helping to alleviate hot temperatures (as much as 10 degrees cooler), improved health benefits (lower rates of asthma) and better air quality. Meet and engage with neighbors as we work together to invest in our neighborhood, ensuring these natural benefits are here for generations to come.

Join Southside ReLeaf, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and City of Richmond's Parks & Rec for a tree care day at Blackwell Park. In the near future, this park will undergo a number of enhancements, including a new community garden, permeable paver parking lot, new paved walking trail, and native plant areas. In preparation for this work, join Parks staff as we identify specimen trees marked for conservation, learn about and remove invasive vines such as English Ivy, winter creeper, and porcelain berry, as well as litter pick up.

The Science Museum is celebrating another milestone in the greening of its campus with the completion of construction on Phase 2 of The Green in May 2024. The focus of Phase 2 was to add more greenspace and remove additional hardscape, while improving campus safety by slowing traffic and minimizing pedestrian/vehicle interactions. The project removed almost 6,000 square feet of impervious surface, planted 43 trees and added two new pollinator friendly planting beds. Come tour Phase 1 and 2 of The Green and learn more about the campus greening efforts of the Science Museum of Virginia.

Volunteer with the JRPS Invasive Species Task Force to remove invasive non-native plants, and plant native trees and shrubs in their place. Work sites change depending on the season and needs, so call the team leader for your day's location. Parking lot at 300 Tredegar Street opens at 9 AM on weekdays. Once parked, take the suspension bridge over to Belle Isle and meet by the Bike Skills Park. Sturdy shoes, long sleeves and long pants are recomended. Bring a water bottle. Please bring work gloves and tools (clippers, e.g.) if you have them.

Come see the first step of turning reclaimed trees from around the city, into usable lumber! RVA Urban Wood, in collaboration with Virginia Department of Forestry, and City of Richmond Parks & Rec and Urban Forestry Divison, will be hosting a public wood milling demonstration and urban wood talk.

Learn about the importance of circular economy, waste diversion, and the value of trees even after "death". By reclaiming these trees, we are diverting the usable portion of the tree from the landfill, turning it into lumber that will be used for Parks & Rec community projects.

Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for a tree planting at Carter Jones Park. Volunteers will work together to plant a variety of medium-sized trees. Most trees will be in 7–15-gallon pots, so they are easy for volunteers to move. The trees will cool our city, filter air and water pollution, stabilize soil to reduce erosion and reduce carbon emissions.

No prior experience is necessary! We will provide all tools, gloves, and instructions needed for a successful planting. Wear weather-appropriate clothes, sturdy shoes, and bring your own water bottle. Please register in advance so we can bring the appropriate number of tools.

Fall is the time let go and release. Join us for a slow sensory nature walk through the Pine Camp forest. We will share poetry, engage in a guided meditation, sit silently and listen to the trees, streams, and wildlife and journal words of inspiration. After observing the palette of light touch the trees, we will make art with found natural materials to create a mindful group mandala. These creative experiences will enhance our artistic ability and increase our connection with nature. Led by a trained Mindful Outdoor Guide.

Chimborazo Native Food Project is a community garden located in the east end of Richmond VA. They are committed to clearing out invasive plants and replacing them with natives! Join them and other volunteers in laying out a seed mix of cover crops and native grassland species, to help establish a native grassland on the hillside adjacent to the garden.

The work will be done on a sloped area with uneven ground, so closed toe shoes are mandatory - sturdy boots are highly recommended. Tools and gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves if you feel more comfortable with them. Drinking water will be available, but please bring a refillable bottle.

We will meet directly across the cobblestone road from the Church Hill Dog Park in Chimborazo Park. Parking can be found in the lot above the dog park, or on the street level when entering the park.

Join the crew from Truetimber Arborists for a guided bicycle ride around Richmond! We will visit some noteworthy trees and green spaces throughout the city, while enjoying Richmond’s urban forest along the ride. Expect a casual pace with occasional stops for discussion.

We will finish the ride at Gramophone Winery (4827 Forest Hill Ave, Richmond, VA 23225) to celebrate the end of another successful Richmond Tree Week!

We will have our final free tree seedlings giveaway, so grab one while you can. Meet other tree lovers, chat with community groups who hosted events throughout the week, and learn about all the different ways to get involved all year long! Let's celebrate reforesting Richmond for a 5th year!
